Baseline Impact Testing Required for All Athletes Gr. 7-12 Will Be Thurs., Aug. 17th at 1:30 PM
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Mosaic Sports Medicine will be switching our neurocognitive testing for baseline concussion testing to Sway Medical. This program will assist our team physicians/athletic trainers in evaluating and treating head injuries (e.g., concussion). It is an exam utilized in many professional, collegiate, and high school sports programs across the country to successfully diagnose and manage concussions. Sway is an app that is used to baseline test athletes before their sports season, to help determine the severity of a concussion and then also during their recovery to make sure the head injury has completely healed.
The Athletic Trainer’s from Mosaic Sports Medicine will be administering the test at the school prior to the Fall Sports Season. This test is completed on your student’s phone (or a provided device if your student does not have a phone) and is a non-invasive test that is set up in “video-game” type format and takes about 20-25 minutes to complete. Essentially, the Sway test is a preseason physical of the brain. It tracks information such as symptoms, balance, memory, reaction time, speed, and concentration.
If a concussion is suspected, the athlete will re-take the test usually within 72 hours after the concussive event but can also take a modified test during an event if the AT thinks it is warranted and on-site. Both the preseason and post-injury test data will be given to and interpreted by the concussion coordinator and a physician to help evaluate the injury. The test data will enable these health professionals to determine when return-to-play is appropriate and safe for the injured athlete. Once the athlete is medically cleared by a physician, he/she must have returned to their baseline on the Sway test and the Return to Play criteria will be followed.
The Sway Test is a free app that can be downloaded from the Apple or Google Play stores. There is no information stored on the device and the student can delete the app if they wish after the initial baseline test in completed. We will complete the baseline test in a group setting with each student using their own device. Please allow your student to download the app to their phone before baseline testing. Included is an informational sheet from Sway and the QR code to download the app. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about baseline testing or the Sway App.
Sincerely,
