1984 THS Boys Basketball Team will be Inducted to Hall of Fame
The undefeated 1984 Troy High School Boys’ Basketball Team, with a 25-0 record, will be inducted into the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, Wednesday, August 6, at Washburn University. Kevin Kelley was the head coach, assisted by Lyle Rockey. Kelley commented, regarding the induction, that at times he felt the team’s efforts had been forgotten.
The celebration will be in two parts. First, at 1:30 p.m. at the student union at Washburn, there will be a reception in honor of the inductees. This is open to the public. Then at the halftime of the boys’ all-star game, to be played at Washburn, the actual induction ceremony will take place. The game begins at 8 p.m.
In regular season play, the team went 22-0, although they remained unranked throughout the season. But, for the second year in a row, they advanced to state playoffs.
In the first game of the playoffs, they defeated the Central-Burden Raiders, 51-49. Troy did not have the lead until the final 18 seconds, when Rob Karn, fouled on a shot, was able to sink the free throws, winning the game.
In game two against Oswego, with 18 seconds left, Oswego was ahead 46-45, with their best free-throw shooter on the line. He missed and with 10 seconds left, Ron Shelton put up the game-winning shot. This 47-46 victory propelled them into the finals and earned them the nickname of the “Cardiac Kids,” for the nail-biting tension at the end of each game.
In the final game, the Trojans trailed Quinter by two points at the half, but immediately went to a 43-33 lead. This game went into overtime, enforcing the “Cardiac Kids” nickname, but the Trojans were victorious, 76-74.
Don Huss was the third-leading tournament scorer with 42 points; Doug Meng and Rob Karn were 5th and 6th, respectively, with 34 and 32 points each.
Players were Mike Goss, Bryan Adkins, Robert Sigrist, Mike Wiedmer, Don Huss, John Marriott, Ron Shelton, Jeff Adkins, Brian Klaus, Rob Karn, Ken Neumann, and Doug Meng.
Cheerleaders were Carrie Chase, Julia Simpson, Jill Jarrett, Theresa Simpson, Karen Thomas, Lisa Weber, Kim Roper, and Paula Smith. Debbie Fitch was the sponsor.
