From the Desk of Patrick McKernan
I hope you are enjoying your summer and are finding time to spend with your children. As usual it has been a busy June around the district and looks like it will be a busy July. I wanted to take time to briefly touch base on the June USD 429 board of education meeting where there was discussion regarding passing a resolution to raise the Rec Commission mill levy. In our community, the rec commission raises money by using the school district’s taxing authority. They do this, because the school district has a larger taxing authority than the city, thus the rec commission can raise more money. The school district does not spend one dime of this money and has no authority to do so. This money is considered “flow through” money, which means the money is sent to the district and then district writes them a check for the amount levied. It is money changing hands. After a lot of discussion on which direction to go, the board of education decided to pass a resolution to raise the mill levy for the rec commission. They did not have to do this. Had the board of education not done this, the raising of additional mills would have then gone to the vote of the people. There are many opinions on what the best direction and decision would have been for the board. Those members in attendance thought the best direction would be to pass the resolution and then let the voters decide if they wanted to challenge, or protest it. I am always so impressed with our board because they do care so much about the youth of our community in all their decisions. I thought it was important to make clear that passing the resolution to raise the mill levy for the rec commission does not give the school district anymore money. Feel free to call me if you have any questions or speak with any board member. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
