From the Desk of Mr. Patrick McKernan
January 15, 2019
I wanted to reach out to all of you and provide an opportunity for input on one of our board of education goals this year. We have begun discussions on moving the 6th grade class to the middle school setting in future years, as early as next year. However, we will not do this without a detailed study. We see many positives for doing this. 6th grade students would be in a seven period schedule a year earlier to help adjust to the middle school setting. There could also be more flexibility with scheduling elective courses for these grade levels. Again, there are positives and negatives and we want to address all.
We are in the preliminary discussions and fact finding. There are scheduling items to figure out, teaching assignments to determine, and many other logistics before we can make an informed decision.
The USD 429 teaching and administrative staff met as a group and discussed the pros and cons of moving the 6th grade and having them attend in the middle school setting.
6th grade students would not participate in school sponsored sports at the middle school. Our participation numbers are fine with the 7th and 8th grade numbers.
Please feel free to share your input with us. Pro or con, positive or negative, in favor of or against, we want to hear from you. Whatever we decide, it will be a decision based on the best interest of the students and the decision will be made in time for the necessary planning that needs to take place to make sure it is a successful endeavor.
