From the Desk of Mr. Patrick McKernan

It is always exciting to begin thinking about the new school year.  We still have some time to prepare for your children, but want to assure you we will be ready for the August 9th enrollment day and the August 28th start day.  There will be some new faces working with your children this school year.  The Troy district is going through a period of transition with long time teachers retiring or moving on to other positions for various reasons.  What is going to be the constant, is that I want to continue to work with the staff to build positive relationships with your children, you, and the entire school community.

As many schools in the state and nation have become more aware of security features they can add for their students, Troy Schools is committed to this as well.  Over the past two years we have installed security cameras on both campuses and this year we will be installing some door lock and video monitor features on some of the entrance doors.  We hope to have those systems in place prior to August 28th.  We were also fortunate to receive grant money for installing inside door locks for our classroom doors. We will be conducting crisis drills for the students and staff.  We will have one drill a month that could involve situations like an intruder, a fight in the hallway, a chemical spill in the science lab, an active shooter, and various other situations.  It is unfortunate this is what we need to do in today’s schools, but it is also the reality and also great preparation if ever needed.  We will be sending more information out about this, after we get a little more direction from the state department of education.

The USD 429 board of education also committed a significant amount of money for a full district network and wireless upgrade and the purchase of over 200 new devices for student use during the day.  I am not a believer that a laptop is the end all in education.  But I do believe getting more access to technology for our students is a must.

I look forward to seeing you all again as the school year gets going.  We are here to help your children succeed and to help them prepare for their life after their K-12 education.  We need your help and support in achieving this important task.
