From the Desk of Mr. Patrick McKernan

As the 2017-2018 school years come to an end, it is important to look back and reflect on the year as well as look forward to next year.  The teachers and students will be moving into summer vacation.  Our custodial and maintenance staff will be working hard with repairs, cleaning, and upkeep of our existing grounds and facilities.  Mrs. Anderson and I will be working most days during the summer as well preparing for another school year, finalizing our budget, and making sure staff and students have the resources they need for next year.

One item I have written about and communicated to our staff, students, and you, is our district technology upgrade and the purchase of more devices for our staff and students to use.  I shared cost figures with the board of education at the May 14, 2018 board meeting regarding the network upgrade.  We are estimating spending fifty-two thousand dollars on the network and wireless upgrade for all our buildings.  We are looking to get a majority of the that money back to us through e-rate funding.  The final cost will not be determined to the penny until we are finished with the project, but we are estimating it will only cost half that much or approximately, twenty-five thousand dollars.

Once our network and wireless upgrade is complete, we will be immersing more devices into the classrooms for our staff and students.  I do believe more technology can enhance the education for the students.  I do not believe more technology is an end all.  Parents, teachers, and students who care about working hard and holding high expectations for each other, is the best way to improve student achievement.

I am looking forward to seeing this project come to fruition and for our students and staff to reap the rewards.  Our current system is running on ten years old or older.  Our bandwidth will increase twenty-fold from 50 megabits to a 1 gigabit connection.  Sometimes things just wear out and it is time to replace them.  It is important for us to continue to make upgrades when needed.

I hope all the parents enjoy their kids for the summer.  Take care.
