Three Troy Staff Members Retiring

When the final bell rings on May 19 and the students head out for the summer, three USD 429 employees will close their journey here at Troy that represents 87 years of service. At 4:00 p.m. May 18th USD 429 will recognize Mrs. Brenda Turpin, Mr. Rick Simmons, and Mrs. Sharon Handley at a reception at the Troy Grade School cafeteria. The public is invited to the recognition with comments beginning at 4:00 p.m.

Brenda Turpin has been a part of USD 429 for 31 years. Brenda attended Highland Community College and then transferred to Benedictine College where she graduated with her bachelor’s degree. Brenda served as our Board Clerk for seven years. She worked as our Board Clerk while attending school. After she graduated, she than began teaching here at USD 429.  Brenda has been married to Larry Turpin for 39 years. They have two children, and had their first grandchild this school year.

Mrs.Turpin when asked to reflect back through the years at USD 429, she said, “It has been a great privilege to work in the Troy School District.  We have always had a staff that truly cares for the students and for each other.  I cannot begin to express my gratitude for all of the support I received from the staff, Board of Education, and the community, first from the wreck and then again after the diagnosis of cancer.  I will truly miss working with the students and the staff here at Troy.   Thank you for everything.”

Rick Simmons has been an employee at USD 429 for 30 years. He began his career with us in 1987 as a grade school custodian. During his first few years at Troy, he helped coach and run the scoreboard for the football games. Rick also has helped drive buses throughout his 30 years at Troy. In 2012, Rick moved from the grade school custodian to the Transportation Director at USD 429. Rick has been married to Peggy Simmons, a retired teacher of USD 429, for 44 years. They have two children and five grandchildren.

As Rick reflected back on his years, he said, “I began working for the school in August, 1987.  Over the 30 years, I have worked for 7 superintendents. Working at the school allowed me to work with Peggy, and to watch my 2 daughters go through the school system.  Each day brought something new, and I have enjoyed working with students, teachers, and staff members.”

Sharon Handley began her work career with USD 429 in 1991. Sharon has worked as a Grade School Custodian all 26 years she has been here. Sharon has always been willing to help anyone around the school district that needed it. She has been married for 40 years to Larry Handley. They have 3 children and 2 grandchildren.

When asking Sharon to reflect back on her years at USD 429, she said, “I really appreciated my job at USD 429. The care and concern of teachers has always amazed me. I have made alot of good friends through the faculty and staff. A day did not go by that a child did not make me smile or laugh. I believe the Board of Education has a hard job. I feel the best thing we can do as a community is stand behind them.”
