April 11, 2008
Winners have been announced in the 2008 contests sponsored by the St. Joseph NewsPress in honor of “Newspapers In Education” week. Ben Wardlow, a Troy Elementary School fourth grader, placed second the Hometown Drawing competition, in the 3rd and 4th grade division. Olivia Bennett, an eighth grader from Troy Middle School, placed second in the 7th and 8th grade division of the Design-An-Ad contest. Troy High School students Madison Twombly, grade 12, placed first, and 10th grader Joey Pasch placed second in the high school division of the same contest. 600 students entered the Hometown Drawing Contest, and the Design-An-Ad contest drew 1,043 entries from across the readership area!
Ben created a colorful picture titled “Old Town Great Fun,” showing the Troy pool, elementary school, and 4H building. Olivia, Madison, and Joey each created ads for “Pigtails ‘n Inkwells,” an educational materials store located in St. Joseph. Troy students also enjoyed creating ads for the 1st Bank of Troy, and Hillyard Technical Center.
All four students were honored at the winners’ reception on April 8 in St. Joseph. They were accompanied by their parents, art teachers Kathy Zwahl and Nancy Clisbee, and Don Cash, principal of TMS / THS. Members of the News-Press staff were on hand to take pictures and offer congratulations. Each winner received a gift certificate.
Look for the winning entries, along with ads selected for publication by each of the participating advertisers, and other winning work, in a special “Newspapers In Education” booklet to be distributed on Monday, April 28, with the News-Press!
